Bowl and Kuksa carving     SOLD OUT

This course is for anyone who has a little experience at carving spoons or has done some axe and knife carving and would like to push themselves with some new projects.  We will learn to carve a selection of small scoops, kuksas and bowls which will give you the knowledge and skills to create more projects at home.

Green wood carving is a fantastic skill to learn as it can be done anywhere, with few tools and very little space.  On this course we will learn to carve a selection of wooden utensils that you can use in your home using hand tools such as an axe, a carving knife, gouges and a spoon knife.

I will show you how to use all the tools safely and effectively, how to split your log, wood selection, safely carving with your axe and you will be shown a whole host of knife grips that will give you the skills to carry carving at home. I have a whole host of different spoon knives and tools for you to try out and we will talk about various designs and shapes to get you inspired for your next wood carving!

On day one we will get into the flow of carving by carving a simple Swedish style butter knife, which we can use to practice the decoration/colour on day two. We will also start a small kuksa/drinking vessel.

Day two – We can start either a larger bowl or larger Kuksa depending on peoples preferences. and I will also talk about decoration and colour on wood.  I use homemade milk paint and egg glaze as well as acrylics and oil paint/linseed oil on my crafts and I will go into detail about how to use these pigments on your own crafts.

I also use chip carving/burning and natural pigments such as coffee, charcoal and paprika, I will show you them all!

As well as carving I will show you how to sharpen and look after your tools and although all tools and wood are provided, you are welcome to bring your own if you have them.

This course is taught by in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere by Nadine Grundy who has over 15 years experience teaching art, crafts and woodwork.
