On this course we will learn to carve with a selection of hand tools which will give you the knowledge and skills to create more projects at home, this course is suitable for beginners or people who have done a little carving and want to try learning some new skills.
Green wood carving is a fantastic skill to learn as it can be done anywhere, with few tools and very little space. On this course you will use a carving axe, a selection of bowl gouges, a carving knife and finishing tools such as planes.
I will show you how to use all the tools safely and effectively, different ways to split a log to achieve different bowl shapes, wood selection, safely carving with your axe and gouge and how to finish with various handtools, This weekend will give you the skills and inspiration to carry on carving at home and creating your own pieces. I have a whole host of different tools for you to try out and we will talk about various designs and shapes to get you inspired for your next creation!
You will go away with a round, handmade bowl with a handmade lid and I will also talk about decoration and colour on wood. I use homemade milk paint and egg glaze as well as grown and foraged inks on my crafts and I will talk about how to use these pigments on your own crafts.
All tools and wood are provided, you are welcome to bring your own if you have them though.
This course is taught by in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere by Nadine Grundy who has over 20 years experience teaching art, crafts and woodwork.
Longway bank woodland site is a ten minute walk from the car park up a steepish woodland path and the entire course is taught outside underneath a parachute shelter. It has a timber framed compost loo and is set in a beautiful place. Please bring suitable outdoor warm clothing and suitable shoes for walking and axing
